Traditional optical encoders are essential components in motion control systems. However, for
reliable operation it is necessary to protect them from harsh environments. This limits the diversity
of applications where encoders can be deployed and can add substantial cost – until now.

Developed by RLS d.o.o., a new line of high-performance magnetic encoders provide many of the
features of optical encoders but without increased robustness.

RLS d.o.o., a Slovenian-based supplier of rotary and linear motion sensors, has tripled the size of its operations with a new, 2,100 m2 custom built facility in Komenda, Slovenia. The new building which includes a 180 m2 clean room with electro-conductive flooring and conforming to ISO-8 standard, represents a significant expansion to the design and manufacturing capability for RLS, which since 2000 has been an associate of the Renishaw Group.

The grand opening of the new facility took place in Autumn 2012 and was attended by senior members of the Renishaw Board, the Mayor of the city of Komenda, partners from the Jozef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana and the University of Ljubljana, and long term suppliers and customers.

Janez Novak, Director of RLS, said: “We are draftingfurther company growth based on our own products, good manufacturing capabilities and solid cooperation with associate company Renishaw. In the coming period, our company is going to invest a lot of effort into our excellence in engineering and into upgrading the quality system, especially because some of our products are designed for demanding, safety-critical applications. Our vision is to become a leading global manufacturer of innovative linear and rotary sensors and elements.

Sir David McMurtry, Renishaw's Chairman and Chief Executive, congratulated Mr Novak and the RLS staff on what had been achieved with the new facility and added, “It has been a joy and a pleasure for me to visit RLS again and meet the staff – they are absolutely amazing. I am delighted how the company is growing, and driven by Janez, we are expecting a great future.”

RLS is a world leader in the design and manufacture of solid-state encoders for measuring speeds and rotary or linear position in the harshest applications. Its products are widely used in gas pumps, robots, oil-field equipment, subsea systems, construction machinery, medical equipment, off-road vehicles and "smart" machines of all types.Besides motor feedback and positioning control, the magnetic encoders are used for torque sensing, flow control, scanning and instrumentation.

Renishaw took a 50% shareholding in RLS in 2000, giving them access to Renishaw's global distribution strength and applications experience as a world leading position encoder supplier.

RoLin™ is a component level encoder system consisting of an RLM readhead and MS magnetic scale or MR ring. It has been designed for embedded motion control applications as a position control loop feedback element.

The actuator is a periodically magnetised scale or ring with a pole length (P) of 2 mm. Radial or axial reading of the ring is possible.

The New LM15 linear magnetic encoder brings up to 100 m travel to demanding high-speed applications. The solid-state, non-contact design features a compact IP68 readhead that rides at up to 4 mm from the self adhesive magnetic strip scale.

The non-contact magnetic sensing delivers reliability in applications too dusty, dirty, greasy or destructive for optical encoders, while providing OEMs with major cost savings. Installation is simplified with an integral setup LED, wide installation tolerances and an applicator tool for the scale. The reference mark is bidirectional and can be ordered at a fixed position at point of order.

Offering great application versatility, the LM15 encoders come in digital output variants and offer a range of resolutions including 5 µm, 10 µm, 20 µm, 50 µm, 125 µm and 625 µm. The LM15 delivers high speed operation of up to 50 m/s (more than 42 m/s at 25 µm).

Engineered for extreme service, the solid-state LM15 linear encoders offer operating temperatures from -20 °C to +85 °C, water-proof sealing to IP68, and high resistance to shock, vibrations, and pressure. The non-contact, frictionless design eliminates wear while reducing hysteresis for high precision at high speeds and acceleration.

The LM15 encoders bring reliable solutions to tough, hard-working applications including woodworking, stone-cutting, sawing, metalworking, textiles, packaging, paper and converting, plastics processing, automation and assembly systems, laser/flame/water-jet cutting, electronic chip/board production, etc.

Renishaw's new AM4096 magnetic encoder IC developed by its associate company RLS d.o.o. takes proven on-axis encoder technology a step further with increased functionality and reduced costs. The OnAxis™ technology is used in many demanding motor and control applications where traditional encoder technologies might fail.

The AM4096 system on-chip magnetic encoder provides UVW outputs with 16 poles (8 pole pairs), incremental, absolute, linear (potentiometer), tacho generator and sinusoidal outputs. Resolution is to 12-bit (4096 steps per turn) with a programmable zero position. The AM4096 is a 3.3 V (or 5 V) low power device with a sleep mode for battery operation. It can be supplied preprogrammed or may be customer programmed with settings stored within its on chip EEPROM. The magnetic encoder is capable of high speed operation to 30,000 rpm and can withstand temperatures from -40°C to +125°C.

Typical applications for the new magnetic encoder IC include commutation and high-speed motor control, position and velocity control, potentiometer replacement and optical encoder replacement.

All of the sensor and processing electronics have been placed within the compact silicon design. The rotation of a simple north / south magnet is picked up by the AM4096's sensor and provides absolute positional information output.
