Wind turbines

RLS magnetic encoders are an excellent solution for speed and position feedback for wind turbines.

Wind turbines

250 kW to 500 kW wind turbine industry will exceed an annual installation of 5 GW by 2024, Global Market Insights reports.

As we move towards a renewable economy, investment in the technologies that will enable us to harmonize economic development and environmental well-being will be necessary. Wind power is a cost-effective, clean fuel source that can be harvested by wind turbines built on existing farms or even offshore at sea. Onshore and offshore wind farms are becoming increasingly efficient at generating electricity from the kinetic energy of wind. In particular, offshore wind turbines that use the vast oceans have improved efficiency due to consistent wind current and quick installation.

Why RLS magnetic encoders?

BENEFITS

  • Customizable resolutions
  • Wide installation tolerances
  • Absolute position information and multiturn range option
  • Extended temperature ranges from -40 °C to 125 °C
  • Non-contact sensing for years of reliable operation

APPLICATIONS

  • RLS encoders are used in wind turbines for yaw and pitch movements and for precise speed feedback at the generator shaft.

How they work?

The energy of the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which drives a generator to produce electricity. Although the principle on which the wind turbines work is very simple, the efficiency of the whole system depends on the quality and reliability of the components used.
